Ferny Creek - Mount Dandenong Tourist Road

Duty of care

Where English Ivy is concerned, the Shire of Yarra Ranges, Knox City Council and Parks Victoria have failed completely in their duty of care for the Dandenong Ranges.  Rated number 2 on the Shire's Environmental Weeds List, Ivy's destructive and invasive nature has been known about by all three groups for over ten years.

Some excellent literature has been produced by the Shire, but no resident has received direct information, advice or instruction on the necessity and urgency of removal of ivy from their property and nature strip.

In the Dandenong Ranges, new trees have been planted and dangerous trees have been removed by the Council but ivy, growing on the stump or nearby, has never been treated or removed.

As ivy ALWAYS starts at the edge of the road, there has been plenty of time and opportunity to deal with it before it starts to ascend nearby trees and structures.

Legislation is required to control invasive English Ivy on private land, as well as public land. The seeds from the mature ivy on this property in Ferny Creek have been spread into adjoining properties and into the forest.

Left unchecked for many years, the ivy has killed trees and destroyed the fence and structures.  The ivy root on one tree was over 30cm in diameter.
